A six part upcoming drama called ‘Years and Years’ written and produced by the legendary ‘Russell T Davies‘, will premiere Tuesday 14|05 at 9PM BST, on BBC One.
The plot will focus on the Manchester based fictional ‘Lyons’ family over a 15 year period. Dealing with every day real life challenges, including gay marriage, childbirth, maturity and politics.
The critically acclaimed three time BAFTA award winner, two time Golden Globe winner and two time Oscar winner ‘Emma Thompson’ plays MP ‘Vivienne Brook’ who is a outspoken celebrity turned politician, along with being a charismatic and controversial character, who’s opinions divide the nation. When asked by the BBC what were your thoughts when you first read the ‘Years and Years’ script by Russell T Davies ? Thompson stated “I met him before when we were all in London talking about doing it and I loved him so much – what an amazing guy and what an extraordinary writer. His writing is absolutely the level of George Orwell. It’s extraordinary, the way in which he’s imagined the future of our relationship with AI, and it has so many shades of all the best science fiction writing.
RTS Award winning actor ‘Russell Tovey’ plays the part of gay housing officer, ‘Daniel Lyons’ and deals with the issues surrounding gay marriage and everyday life. ‘Tovey’ told the BBC that he was attracted to the role because he wanted to work with ‘Russell T Davies’ and further stated “I love the way ‘Davies’ writes dialogue and the fact the emotion can be flipped on its head; you’re crying and then suddenly laughing again. I loved the concept, it confused me to begin with but I thought that was a good thing, to not be completely clear but knowing all the while that you trust the person who’s creating it.
The iconic BAFTA nominated actress ‘Anne Reid’ MBE plays the part of ‘Mureil Deacon’ who is head of the family as the grandmother. ‘Deacon’ is a larger than life character that is devoted to her ‘Lyons’ family and always has her families best interests at heart. When asked by the BBC what do you think audiences will take away from the series? Reid replied “I think a little bit of anxiety about what’s going to happen with the future, but I think it’s a story that will stay in their minds. Something’s good if you wake up the next morning still thinking about it, it doesn’t float away.
The immensely talented ‘Russell T Davies’ was a honorary guest last week, at the BAFTA CYMRU preview screening of ‘Years and Years’ which was held at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. The event was a great success and ‘Josh Dinnen’ who attended the event stated ” I had the pleasure of meeting the main man behind Dr Who at the BAFTA CYMRU screening of this incredible new project ‘Years and Years’. It is absolutely mind blowing and hilarious with such an incredible cast and I can’t wait for episode two. ‘Russell T Davies’ made this statement to the BBC: “I’ve wanted to write this for 20 years or so. And as the world accelerates like crazy around us, I realised I’d better get on with it! It’s a joy to be back home with RED, and an honour to be on BBC One.”
The 6×60-minute drama is created, written and executive produced by Russell T Davies, with Nicola Shindler and Michaela Fereday as executive producers for Red Production Company and Lucy Richer for the BBC. Series producer is Karen Lewis (Happy Valley, Last Tango In Halifax) and with Simon Cellan Jones (Our Friends In The North, Jessica Jones, Boardwalk Empire) as director and executive producer.
